Wondering why your skin may be aging faster than ever? Want to know how to prevent your skin from aging faster? Make sure you read this article to the end.

As we get older, our skin tends to become more sensitive to the sun’s rays, or certain cosmetic products can damage our skin.

This can make maintaining healthy, radiant skin seem like an uphill battle, not to mention the inevitable wrinkle that comes with getting older.

Skin aging is a natural process that we should embrace, and there are treatments available to help slow down the process of premature aging.

However, it may be beneficial to consider some of the most common reasons why your skin may be aging faster than ever.

    1. Refined sugars

Research published by F William Danby stated that the effects of refined sugar on the aging skin are largely due to its ability to covalently bind two collagen fibers, rendering both of them unable to be easily repaired.

Excessive consumption of sugar and carbohydrates is detrimental to one’s overall health and well-being, as it erodes the elasticity and strength of the skin.

The solution: Eat a balanced diet, including plenty of vegetables, and drink plenty of water. If you have to eat something, make healthy snacks at home.

    2. Lack of sleep and rest

Research published by clinical and experimental dermatology shows that poor quality sleep is linked to signs of internal aging, reduced skin barrier function, and decreased self-esteem.

It’s self-evident. You need a good night’s sleep to wake up and feel refreshed. Not getting enough sleep affects your skin’s ability to recover from sun damage. Plus, your eyes never look good on you.

The solution: Just have a good night’s sleep! According to research, adults should sleep between 7:00 and 9:00 a.m.

Adults sleeping less than 7:00 p.m. may experience more health problems than those sleeping 7:00 or more.

    3. Drinking alcohol and smoking

Studies have shown that the effects of smoking and alcohol consumption on the skin and volume associated with facial aging are significant but distinct.

Alcohol has been identified as a diuretic, which means it dehydrates and depletes the skin. As we age, our skin tends to become thinner and drier.

Drinking alcohol accelerates the aging process by overworking vital organs such as the liver and kidneys.

The solution: Quit drinking and minimize your alcohol intake. Examples of 1 drink include Beer: 12 fluid ounces (which means 355 milliliters) and Wine: 5 fluid ounces (which means 148 milliliters).

    4. Poor hydration and moisturizing

According to new research published on January 24, 2023, stated that poor hydration may speed up biological aging and heighten the risk of chronic diseases and mortality.

The result of dehydrated skin cells is fine lines, redness, and dry, flaky skin.

The solution: Fortunately, most moisturizers are water-soluble, so they will keep your cells hydrated. So, make sure to use a good moisturizer and drink plenty of water to keep your cells plump and soft.

    5. Sun exposure

Over the years, research has shown that more than 80% of the aging process is caused by exposure to ultraviolet radiation from the sun.

Exposure to UV rays causes damage to the skin’s protein and elastic fibers, leading to sagging skin and wrinkles.

The solution: Always wear sunscreen. Always wear protective clothing. Always wear hats. Always wear sunglasses. Always avoid sun exposure between 10:00 am and 3:00 pm. Always use SPF30+ sunscreen. SPF30+ helps to prevent hyperpigmentation and scarring.

    6. Rubbing your eyes too often

Rubbing your eyes may seem like a great way to relax after a long day at the office, but it can actually cause redness and dryness in your eyes.

The skin underneath your eyes is extremely thin and delicate, so if you rub it too much, it can cause damage to the blood vessels beneath the skin.

This can lead to dark circles, and if you rub your eyes too often, it can loosen the skin around your eyes and stretch it out, which can cause crow’s feet, which are very hard to remove.

The solution: It’s advised to stop rubbing your eyes too often. Instead of rubbing your eyes whenever you feel like it, use clean water to wash your eyes.

    7. Sleeping On Your Stomach

While we all have our preferred sleep positions that help us drift off faster, some of these positions can also contribute to the formation of fine lines and wrinkles according to research published by Brett S Kotlus.

Sleeping on your stomach pushes your face against the pillow and causes your skin to develop vertical wrinkles.

Since this happens every single night, the wrinkles are constantly reinforced and can eventually become permanent.

The solution: It is believed that sleeping on the left side is the most beneficial for your health. So, stick to that!

    8. Using Bar Soaps

Bar soaps may look great on your bathroom counter, but they can actually be very damaging to your skin.

Many bar soaps contain ingredients that change the pH level of your skin, leading to a loss of natural oils and dryness.

The solution: Instead of bar soap, choose a mild cleanser with mild ingredients that are healthy for your skin type.
