How long does vitamin K stay in the body? Vitamin K is fat-soluble, meaning it can stay in the body’s fat tissues for longer than water-soluble vitamins. It usually stays in the body for a few days to a few weeks.

The amount of time vitamin K stays in the body can vary greatly from person to person, depending on factors such as age, gender, diet, and overall health condition.

However, regular and adequate vitamin K intake from food sources is essential for blood clotting and general health.

    Factor 1: Age

As we get older, our bodies start to absorb fewer nutrients from food. As a result, younger people may be able to absorb vitamin K faster than older people.

So, if you are getting older, you can expect vitamin K to last longer than younger ones.

    Factor 2: Gender

Men and women metabolize substances differently. Some research suggests that women metabolize certain vitamin K forms more quickly than men, which could cause differences in retention time between men and women.

    Factor 3: Diet

If you eat high-quality vitamin-K foods on a regular basis, you can expect your vitamin-K levels to stay high for longer than those who don’t.

    Factor 4: Health condition

If you’re dealing with an infection or other health issues, your body may not have enough time to break down vitamin K.

This can result in vitamin K remaining in your body for an extended period of time.

Taking all of these factors into account, the average amount of time vitamin K remains in your body is about one week.

How Much Vitamin K Do I Need?

    Adequate Intakes for Vitamin K
    Age Male Female Pregnancy Lactation
    Birth to 6 months 2.0 mcg 2.0 mcg – –
    7 to 12 months 2.5 mcg 2.5 mcg – –

    4 to 8 years 55 mcg 55 mcg – –
    9 to 13 years 60 mcg 60 mcg – –
    14 to 18 years 75 mcg 75 mcg 75 mcg 75 mcg
    19+ years 120 mcg 90 mcg 90 mcg 90 mcg

Can You Get Too Much Vitamin K?

According to research, toxicity to vitamin K is pretty rare. The only one that’s been reported is Menadione, but it’s not safe for humans.

It’s thought to be toxic because it’s water-soluble. When it does happen, it can cause jaundice, liver damage, hemolytic anemia, and in babies, kernicterus.

In most cases, however, taking too much vitamin K isn’t usually a problem, as we typically don’t take large amounts of vitamin K without intent.
